Love & Life at the Movies

The Love & Life at the Movies curriculum is an abstinence/marriage education program designed for teens and young adults featuring lesson plans based on classic films. By observing the behavior of the characters in these films, students gain an awareness of their capacity to develop lasting and committed relationships within marriage and the larger community. The curriculum is based on the principles of “Whole Person Learning” developed by Educational Guidance Institute. These principles reflect a perspective on human nature that transcends the boundaries of culture, race, era and social status. Films in the curriculum model the meaning of committed love, show the importance of marriage and family, and connect personal character to the common good of society.

Most films in the curriculum, either directly or indirectly, model the meaning of committed love in marriage. For example, in It’s a Wonderful Life, students see both negative and positive ways of forging relationships with the opposite sex: shallow dating vs. healthy dating within the context of family and community. Furthermore, Love & Life at the Movies teaches the importance of marriage, family, and responsible fatherhood for a stable society. This is most emphasized in such films as A Raisin in the Sun, Sounder and It's a Wonderful Life.

Love & Life at the Movies provides an opportunity for in-depth discussion about character and virtue to enrich marriage preparation, abstinence education, and character-building programs concerned with enhancing students' moral development and academic achievement. Love & Life at the Movies reflects feedback from teachers in public schools, after-school programs and detention homes and was successfully piloted in Title V and SPRANS abstinence education projects. The program is teacher-friendly for any educational setting—regular classroom, faith-based, after-school, youth development, alternative classroom and detention home programs; it also fulfills rigorous academic requirements in today’s standards-driven school environments, providing vocabulary-building and essay-writing skills.
